Over the past few months, I have been working with Creative Folkestone to put together advertising materials for their new interactive art project ‘The Plinth’. The project, inspired by Banksy’s piece ‘Art Buff’, features 14 empty plinths scattered around Folkestone. People are encouraged to create their own pieces of art, display them on these plinths and document the process.
As with a lot of projects and work started during a pandemic, it wasn’t without its problems. The creation and installation of the plinths would not be happening until close to the start of the event, so using images of them set up wouldn’t be possible. Instead, I chose to focus on using areas of Folkestone, recognisable landmarks that were near or at the very places these plinths were going to be placed. Using bright, bold colours, I tried to make these landmarks stand out in the bright and colourful way graffiti stands out against an otherwise basic backdrop. As is normal working with an established brand, I was somewhat limited with typography, but turning the ‘i’ into a plinth was a no-brainer.
This has been a really fun and exciting project to work on, and an incredible opportunity for artists to participate in. The project will be running from Friday 18 September to Sunday 8 November.
