“Sub-Plot”

Folkestone Fringe is an arts organisation that places much of their focus on supporting local and emerging artists in a town that is quickly becoming a hub for art on the south coast. The idea behind the ‘Sub-Plot’ campaign is to encourage local artists and businesses to become more involved in the works surrounding the Folkestone Triennial.

Using collages, shapes and bold colours, we wanted to focus the campaign on the ‘hidden gems’ of Folkestone rather than the more obvious landmarks or artistic sites.

Sub-Plot was one of a number of campaigns being run during the Folkestone Triennial, each one requiring its own branding and art style whilst also being easily identifiable as a Folkestone Fringe Campaign.

“GLUE”

The GLUE campaign is another for Folkestone Fringe, this time focusing on giving new and upcoming curators a platform during the Folkestone triennial. The target audience is students, recent graduates and young artists, so my approach was simple and modern. Working at a creative arts university, I often see examples of students’ work around campus and had a pretty good idea of styles that are popular.

I also had to ensure that this campaign was easily identifiable as a Folkestone Fringe project. I enjoy bringing together a brand’s identity with current trends, and exploring how they can be used to reach new audiences.

“Signals”

Signals was a public art project that focused heavily on Folkestones long history of sea fairing and it’s rich maritime heritage. Developed through lockdown to present day, Signals is a messaging project using international maritime flags as a regenerated form of visual communication that celebrates Folkestone’s rich maritime culture, whilst encouraging communities to come together again to engage in new forms of communication.

With this campaign, Fringe wanted the Folkestone harbour and sea to be prominent within the advertising. It was also key that the viewers would be able to read and understand the coded messages with ease. For this I aimed to play on the historical side of the project by creating aged graphics, with a colourful and easy to read chart for the signal flags themselves.
